Frequently Asked Questions

You may need to file a Self Assessment tax return if you are self-employed, a landlord, a company director, or receive additional untaxed income such as dividends or investments.

What is the deadline for submitting a tax return?

The deadline for online Self Assessment submissions is 31 January following the end of the tax year. Paper returns must be submitted earlier (usually 31 October).

What happens if I miss the deadline?

HMRC issues automatic penalties starting from £100, with further charges applied for continued delays and unpaid tax.

What is Making Tax Digital (MTD)?

Making Tax Digital is HMRC’s initiative to modernise the tax system, requiring digital record keeping and more frequent reporting instead of one annual submission.

MTD starts from 6 April 2026 for individuals with income over £50,000, and from April 2027 for those earning over £30,000.
